You guys have been followed us this whole semester and hearing all the bad things about Internet and IAD. This last post will give you a summary of everything we've been discussed, as well as, we will touch on BAD and GOOD sides of Internet in general.
The GOOD side
1. Communication:
Internet has made it so much easier and faster to connect and communicate with people anywhere anytime in the world. "Our earth has reduced and has attained the form of a global village." Not only emailing, chatting, and video conferencing with our families and friends, but developing global economics and exploring other culture of different ethnicity are undeniable uses of Internet.
2. Information:
You can find any sort of information, any type of data on almost any kind of subject that you are looking for just by going on the Internet search engines like Google, Yahoo, Bing, and so on.
3. Entertainment:
Media of internet has become quite successful in trapping entertainment factor. Online games, music, video, chat rooms, you name it, are indeed the most uses of Internet.
4. Services:
Many online services are now provided widespread on the Internet such as banking and e-commerce. The BAD side
1. Privacy
2. Virus threats
3. Serious health issues
4. Internet Addiction
Though there are downsides of Internet uses and effects on health, society, work, and relationships, the advantages of Internet outweigh its disadvantages. However, we should not deny or ignore the serious impacts it lays on our lives, as we mentioned in our presentation "MODERATE IS THE KEY." Know the limit and you can take out most of the GOOD sides; otherwise, it's not worthy!
Is it internet addiction if you are performing everyday tasks? I just had a conversation with someone earlier today who mentioned they hate cell phones, yet they have one. Our society has become accustomed to having a phone on us always. It is what keeps us connected and plugged into the world around us, especially being that most phones today have internet capabilities. There is a fine line between internet addiction and internet use. A lot of people don't do what you suggest and moderate their use to be honest with themselves about what their opportunity costs to living life are. Instead, they hide out from real world society by being on the internet. This is where I would agree it is unhealthy. However, if people are using the internet to improve their ability to live their lives through real interactions, it is healthy and even helpful.
ReplyDeleteI think it is like everything, you need balance. The internet has become a main part of life and is growing in everyday use. With this growth and dependency on the use of the internet addiction and misuse is could almost be considered predictable. If however, you can incorporate internet usage and balance it with the other aspects of life then the benefits it produces far outweigh the downsides
ReplyDeleteI agree with chardil6. Everything requires balance because too much of a good thing can always be harmful or used in an malicious way can be very damaging.
ReplyDeleteTo have health repercussions due to internet addiction is quite excessive. I do believe it is possible, but I find completely excessive and that tells that some people are easily influenced by newly developed technologies, and create unnecessary dependences on things like facebook, blogging, video games and more. It is also a matter of priorities that lead to this kind of behavior that could ultimately represent itself in a physical sense with malnutrition, exhaustion, and my favorite carpal tunnel syndrome.
ReplyDeleteLike you mentioned before moderation is key. It is quite impossible for most of us to go on about our day without being connected in some way, either it be our phones, ipods, or laptops. Thank you for stressing that the advantages do outweigh the negatives, it is just a matter of self awareness and control.
ReplyDeleteYou are right…it is all about moderation. The internet’s benefits far outweigh the disadvantages (in my opinion anyway), but not when they start interfering with peoples ability to function offline. I don't think I have an "addiction", but I don't know if I could ever give up the interet. The world has become too dependent on the ease of accessing information!
ReplyDeleteIsn't addiction something we can control? Although there are pros and cons to this, we have to personally outweigh them and see how much time we spend online
ReplyDeleteI agree with Ayah E. The addiction is not caused by the internet itself. Internet is created for a better communication tool as well as provides a betterl ife for us. However, the way people misuse its function come from themselves habit. We can't blame on it. Internet addition is only a personal issue that people need to deal with.
